Virtual Open Days

GOTS to introduce virtual open days

Global Oak Tree Scholars (GOTS) co-founder Veronica Shepherdson is someone who always looks on the bright side of life.

While she knows it has not been an easy year for everyone, she says the Covid-19 pandemic has shown how much can be achieved with love, understanding and teamwork.

When the government announced the closing of schools as part of the Movement Control Order (MCO) back in March, Shepherdson and her team of coaches already had a plan in place to do online lessons – even though it was something they had never done before.

And now, the international school based in Shah Alam is ready to take it a step higher by introducing virtual open day workshops for parents who are interested in enrolling with GOTS.

“We have to do this to give the parents an idea of what we can offer,” said Shepherdson.

“We will meet the parents first and then arrange a date and time for their children.

“We are finalising how to go about this. We are likely to have a two-hour virtual workshop for each subject.

“For now, the focus will be on the 10 to 14-year-old scholars.”

Shepherdson also said the online lessons have given the GOTS scholars an edge.

“We had planned everything in advance and once again I would like to thank the whole team for making it possible,” said Shepherdson.

“Online coaching was something we had to adapt to as nothing beats meeting and greeting the scholars.

“We did ‘live’ lessons until just before Hari Raya and now we are on our mid-term break. I must say, we are happy with how it has turned out.”

On the international school’s targets for the year, she said: “We have had to adjust and re-evaluate our targets for the year. Everything changed when Covid-19 hit.

“We have been experiencing good growth – we went from having a primary school to one which includes pre-primary and secondary – and we expect to increase our numbers even more this year.

“Right now, we have to fortify the school’s status as a standout in Shah Alam and hopefully build on the success we have had since 2018.”

Shepherdson also said the school is ready to reopen as it has done all the necessary sanitisation and cleaning up at both its campuses – City of Elmina and Plaza Jelutong, Bukit Jelutong.

In fact, several of its staff members are stationed in both places to handle enquiries.

“Our staff have been marvelous. Everyone is so understanding and the teamwork makes my job so much easier.”
