Untold joy for July’s top scholars

Untold joy for July’s top scholars

Pure joy. This best describes the expression written all over Jayden Nishaan Sandhu’s face when it was revealed he was one of two scholars who had won July’s Student of the Month Award.

Unlike previous months where there was only one winner, Global Oak Tree Scholars (GOTS) will name two winners from now on.

The other winner, Muhammad Roshan Awan, had an inkling he was going to win as his mother, Cheryl Paul, was in attendance for the award ceremony.

Jayden’s mother is GOTS’ senior ambassador Manpreet Kaur and as such, her presence during the ceremony didn’t alert him to the surprise.

“I was so excited when I saw my picture,” said Jayden, who high-fived his friends and let out whoops of joy when he realised he was one of the winners.

“I was a little disappointed at first as I didn’t think I would be the winner after I saw my friend’s (Roshan’s) mother before the ceremony.

“This is the best day of my life! I’m so happy as I have been working hard on winning this award.”

Roshan was just as excited but managed to contain his delight.

“I knew I had won as I saw my mum in the hall,” said Roshan, conscious to the fact that scholars’ parents are always invited to the ceremony as they too receive a congratulatory letter.

“I wasn’t expecting to win as my schoolmates are all so hardworking.

“It is a big honour for me to be named Student of the Month and I will aim for the yearly award as well.”

Cheryl said she received the news two days before the ceremony and made arrangements to see Roshan collect his prize.

“He has changed so much since joining GOTS late last year. He is more confident and has matured so much,” said Cheryl.

“My only complaint is that he loves school so much sometimes he doesn’t want to go home!”

Manpreet, who many describe as “the glue which holds GOTS together”, was just as delighted with Jayden’s win.

“He has always told me he wanted to win it since we started the awards this year. Words can’t express how happy I am to see his joy,” said Manpreet.

“The award is a good motivation for the scholars as they don’t have to wait until the end of the year to be recognised for their hard work.”
