Susilawati Saad

Worry not, kakak has your child’s back

Susilawati Saad worked a myriad of jobs in her life but has finally found something she loves doing – and it came along unexpectedly.

About nine months ago, she spoke to Global Oak Tree Scholars (GOTS) co-founder Veronica Shepherdson about the nanny position at its pre-primary school.

GOTS began with the primary school before expanding to include pre-primary and secondary.

As it was growing fast, it required a nanny – one who was not only good with children but also willing to go the extra mile to help the coaches in the classrooms.

Shepherdson did not hesitate in hiring Susilawati as it was obvious she was a loving and nurturing person who could easily fit into the tight-knit family at GOTS.

“I have always loved kids and enjoy babysitting for my relatives,” said Susilawati, who is affectionately called ‘kakak’ by the scholars.

“I really love what I do at GOTS. I don’t think I have ever said that about any of my previous jobs.

“I look forward to coming here and feel sad when we have our holidays as the children are like my own.

“I love each and every one of them so much.”

Susilawati, who is married and has a daughter, said: “Even when I’m away from my family I still feel at home in school.

“All the scholars are so adorable and the coaches here are like my second family.

“I’m indeed so lucky. We all look after each other to ensure the children are always in good hands.”

Susilawati has also earned the praise of her colleague Pushpa Devi Subramaniam, an early childhood educator for more than 20 years.

“She is of such great help to us coaches. Anyone who has worked in pre-primary or nurseries know it is not so easy or simple,” said Pushpa.

“It is always good to have a spare pair of hands in the classroom as the scholars can get quite excited at times.

“Although we limit the number of scholars in each class and each coach has an assistant, Susilawati plays a vital role in making sure everything is where they should be when we need them.”

Pushpa said Susilawati also helps feed the scholars and keeps an eye on them when it is nap time or when we have to freshen them up.

“She said it perfectly when she described us as a family. We help each other out and we simply love what we do.”
