Rebooting PE classes
Timothy Naden Henry was a budding state hockey player when he discovered the world of bodybuilding three years ago.
It was then he decided to forego his promising career in hockey to “build muscles”.
“I was quite skinny and not as strong back then. Many of my friends may not recognise me now,” jokes Henry, who has been a personal trainer for the past one year.
“It was only in the last 12 months that I considered becoming a trainer and I have no regrets. It has been the best decision of my life.”
Now with Rebel Bootcamp, Henry conducts physical education classes at Global Oak Tree Scholars (GOTS) once a week.
“People normally associate boot camp with adults but children too can experience the joy of boot camp,” he said.
“In fact, it is even more challenging training children as we cannot push them too much. While they are quite energetic, they tire easily.
“On the plus side, children are more enthusiastic and are ever ready to follow our instructions.”
Henry says Rebel Bootcamp’s children classes fit into GOTS’ ethos.
“Like GOTS, we have to be different and creative in the way we conduct our classes.
“The only theme in each class is lots and lots of running as children just love to run.
“For our other exercises, we inject lots of fun and colour so they do not get bored.
Behind the fun, there are some serious fitness activities going as the GOTS scholars have to do sit-ups, push-ups, planks, squats, burpees and other such exercises you see at a boot camp.
“Our aim is to get the children fit and active.
“The programmes help develop strong muscles and bones, improve hand-eye coordination, reduce the chance of being overweight, lower risk of diabetes, improve awareness about body fat and lower blood pressure.
“I have learnt so much from teaching children. I would say they have helped me understand my adult clients better as I have become more patient.
“Who says you do not learn from kids?”
