Public speaking competition

Public speaking competition

Naomi conquers her fears

It took Naomi Shalom Murphy a few seconds to digest the news before going up to receive her prize.The Year 6 student at Global Oak Tree Scholars (GOTS) admitted winning the Shah Alam-based international school’s inaugural public speaking competition was a big surprise.

“I didn’t expect to be among the top three, let alone win,” said Naomi.

“It took me about a week to research and prepare my ‘talk’ and I received plenty of support from my family.

“I was very nervous and scared in the beginning but became more confident as I was speaking.

“This has given me a big confidence boost and I hope there will be more such competitions in future.”

Twelve students, three each from Years 6, 7+, 8 and 9 entered the competition.

The topic for Year 6 was ‘What it means to be me’ while for 7+ was about ‘Technology and Humanity’.

Year 8 spoke about ‘The Generational Gap’ while Year 9’s topic was ‘Independence’.

National ice-skater Maryam Mahmud of Year 8 was the runner-up while Muhamad Kayden Muhamad Zairulnizam of Year 7+ was third.

Interestingly, after the ‘official competition,’ the coaches opened the floor to an impromptu contest which saw the younger scholars volunteering to compete.

“I’m very surprised and pleased to see the younger ones motivated to speak in public,” said Head of Primary Chithra Nair.

“The seniors gave them the confidence to try. I think we will have a bigger competition next year.”

Besides focusing on academics, GOTS also promotes life skills and an appreciation of the arts.

Public speaking is an important skill to master as it can help with, among others:
* Building confidence
* Critical thinking
* Career advancement
* Communication skills
* Personal development
