18 May PE at GOTS
Mohd Ruszaiman Mohd Idrus is no ordinary physical education (PE) coach.
What makes Ruszaiman special is he also holds a D Coaching Licence from the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM).
So, unlike traditional PE teachers, he is a certified football coach. He has also taken several online courses in athletics, fitness, and sports management.
The 31-year-old from Kangar, Perlis, has been teaching for more than seven years and joined Global Oak Tree Scholars (GOTS) International School in January.
“I used to work with the school’s co-founder (Veronica Shepherdson), so I knew GOTS International School would be a good fit,” said Ruszaiman, who also has an MBA from Universiti Kuala Lumpur.
“I’m looking forward to making a difference. I want to expose the scholars to more sports – but it looks like I have to wait until after the MCO (Movement Control Order) ends.”
Ruszaiman obtained his FAM coaching licence in 2019.
A D Licence is open to coaches, teachers, volunteers, and individuals who work with children aged 9 to 12.
The four core skills from the course are first touch, striking the ball (passing), running with the ball and one vs one.
“I have always been interested in sports and football. It was only logical and practical for me to get a license as it would help my career,” said the Liverpool die-hard.
Since joining GOTS International School, Ruszaiman has been handicapped by the MCO, which meant lessons had to go online.
Be that as it may, he devised several online exercises to keep the youngest to the oldest interested.
“It is not easy doing PE classes online as I’m not there to correct their form if they incorrectly perform an exercise,” said Ruszaiman, who also coaches Bahasa Melayu.
“The scholars need to be active at least for 30 minutes daily as most of the time, they would be glued to their laptops, phones or tablets for the online classes.
“I do what I can to help them be as energetic as possible during our classes.”
He added the first two months of this year were spent building up the scholars’ fitness after their month-long term break in December.
“They are lucky the school offers boot camp, so they were not too bad in that aspect,” he said.
“Surprisingly, many of them love the ‘punishment’ and willingly do extra burpees and other lunges as they see them as fun activities.
“Most adults would probably disagree!”
