No homework at GOTS means quality time with kids
Shirley Roger loves Global Oak Tree Scholars (GOTS) as it doesn’t stress her out!
“There are so many things I love about GOTS but the number one reason is there is no homework!” said Roger, who has two children in GOTS – Jeremiah John Lopez and Genesis Faustina Lopez.
“Everything is done in school and that means when my kids come home, we have quality time together.
“It lessens the pressure on parents as we don’t have to worry about helping them with their school work.
“Of course, as a parent, I still have to do my part in teaching them but I’m just glad they don’t bring back homework.”
Roger said what attracted her most to GOTS was the small number of scholars in each classroom.
At GOTS, the teacher-scholar ratio is one to a maximum of 12 (for children aged three to four) while it is a maximum of 15 for those aged five.
There are assistant teachers and nannies for these age-groups as well.
For primary and secondary, it is a maximum of 15-20 scholars per classroom.
“My kids can get individual attention as the classes are small. This has helped my kids tremendously,” said Roger.
“I also like the fact they don’t put any pressure on the kids.
“I was worried about the results initially but they told me not to worry, they are teaching to my kids’ ability.”
Allowing this process, has brought a big change in Jeremiah who is entering Year 2 next year and Faustina who is moving into pre-primary from the nursery.
“They are constantly asking me questions. This is part of their learning as the coaches in GOTS encourage them to be outgoing and inquisitive.”
Roger said Jeremiah has also become financial-savvy due to the FinancialSmart programme which is part of the GOTS curriculum.
“They are teaching kids from young how to handle money. How good is that?
“It is a bit hard going shopping with Jeremiah though as he is always telling me not to waste money or asking if I really need to buy an item!” she said with a laugh.
“But it’s good as he shows he knows the value of money.”
