Constantly learning from each other at GOTS
At Global Oak Tree Scholars (GOTS) International School, we always boast about having A+ coaches.
One reason is that learning never stops and our coaches are consistently evaluated.
Head of Academics Gerard Abisheganaden said: “The coaches and scholars are consistently learning from each other as that’s the ‘the beauty of the school’.
“The coaches know they will be evaluated on their performances from time to time. This ensures they are always at their best.
“Hiring the best coaches is one thing; ensuring they stay on top of the game is also important.”
Abisheganaden is now more involved with the secondary scholars after initially being the principal of the primary school.
He said he enjoys working with them as the key to handling these older scholars is understanding “teenagers make mistakes”.
That is why he is firm yet fair when dealing with the secondary scholars.
“Discipline is important, but we must realise teenagers make mistakes. I made many mistakes while growing up.
“But learning from them is how we get back on the right path,” said Abisheganaden.
“Our scholars have a lot of leeway in school but there is a line they can’t cross.
“By treating them as adults, we are allowing them to take responsibility for their actions.
“It is about giving them the tools to be independent.”
Towards that end, he said in-house programmes like S.H.I.N.E. – the first experiential Emotional Intelligence (EQ) focused training framework in Southeast Asia – and FinancialSmart teach the scholars valuable life lessons.
S.H.I.N.E. – (S)eeking (H)onour (I)n (N)ever-ending (E)xcellence – moulds children to be committed to life’s core values that will accelerate their journey towards industry or entrepreneurial success.
FinancialSmart teaches the scholars the value of money and develops financial-savvy kids and teenagers by complementing academic achievement with financial literacy.
“The other programmes such as speech and drama, music and public speaking give the scholars the license to express themselves creatively,” said Abisheganaden.
