‘Jolly’ fun time teaching pre-schoolers
It is not easy dealing with young children and even more difficult trying to teach them new things.
Here’s where Global Oak Tree Scholars Head of Pre-primary Chithra Nair and coaches Pushpa Devi Subramaniam and Marissa Juanita Hendroff take a different approach to coach young ones.
One way of introducing the alphabet to pre-schoolers is by using Jolly Phonics which does away with the traditional teaching style.
Jolly Phonics teaches children to read and write using synthetic phonics, which is widely recognised as the most effective way to teach.
Once the first few letter sounds are learnt, children begin blending the sounds together to help them read and write new words.
“The first six letters we teach are S, A, T, I, P, N. The reason being they can be used to create numerous three-letter words,” explained Chithra during a Coffee with GOTS event with parents last week.
“We also use songs to help the children memorise words and sounds. And we don’t just use nursery rhymes.
“Marissa and Pushpa have even taught them songs such as ‘Take me home country roads’ as it is easy to understand and learn.”
This was a big revelation for some of the parents, who admitted wondering how their children, some as young as three years old, knew the John Denver classic.
Meanwhile, Afida Sohana Awang Soh@Yusoff, whose daughters na Safeeya Syahrul Hizan and Ara Saleeha are in Year 1 and pre-primary, said she noticed a visible change in her younger child.
“We used to send Ara to a speech therapist. We discovered one of the reasons why we had trouble understanding her was because she was listening and watching stuff with Ana.
“So while Ara knew the words, she didn’t understand the proper meaning or the correct way to construct her sentences.
“But since coming to GOTS, she has improved so much.”
