GOTS coaches with hearts of gold

Two Global Oak Tree Scholars (GOTS) International School coaches are doing their part to raise awareness on good causes.

One is Recine Wan Jasmine Jaafar, who went bald recently to donate her hair to association Locks of Hope for it to be turned into wigs for cancer patients.

The other is Nicole Ng who has released an online Christmas album for a minimum of RM7 (or any price you like to donate). The profits will be donated to an Orang Asli community in Mantin.

Recine has been donating her hair to make wigs since her teens but this is the first time she has gone bald.

“It started when I was 15. A friend’s younger sibling had leukaemia and a group of us cut our hair to make him a wig,” said Recine, 23.

“Since then, it has become a tradition to donate my hair each year. However, I didn’t do so last year and decided to go bald this year to make up for it.”

She added another reason for going bald is because Covid-19 has affected many people’s lives while some organisations have suffered in terms of funding.

She hopes her gesture will help raise awareness of cancer patients’ plight.

Ng said she had planned to do a charity album for a long time but didn’t know which cause to support.

“Recently, I learnt about the Orang Asli community in Mantin and how they needed some donations,” said Ng.

“It has not been a good year for many but I received many blessings. As such, I wanted to give something back to those in need.

“I know many organisations have suffered or lost some funding.

“Initially, I had a fuller band for the album. That was in August but the Conditional Movement Control Order (CMCO) made completing the album a challenge.

“We couldn’t meet up as they were from different districts and we had to put the album on hold.

“I then contacted my bandmates (Gabriel Januarius and Malcolm Ambrose) and requested to do something simple.

“My drummer (Ambrose) recorded his bit in the studio while Januarius recorded his sessions (piano, bass, music direction and arrangement) in his home. I recorded my songs in my bedroom!
“I believe we could have done a better job if we were together.”

Despite the challenges, Ng said after four days, there were 130 downloads.

GOTS co-founder Veronica Shepherdson, who is supportive of both her coaches, said: “GOTS is so blessed to have a team of not only wonderful teachers but also with such precious hearts.”
