Double celebration for GOTS’ taekwondo exponents

Master Mark Lim is not an easy person to please.

The taekwondo instructor, who has been coaching at Global Oak Tree Scholars (GOTS) since early last year, is known as a disciplinarian who brooks no nonsense.

GOTS co-founder Veronica Shepherdson jokingly admitted even she is afraid of him!

Yet last Thursday, he had the widest smile on his face as it was a double celebration at GOTS.

Shepherdson presented five exponents with the medals they won at the International Heros Taekwondo Cup while Lim also gave six of them new belts for passing their grading examination.

“As the instructor, it is my task to organise the assessments but I’m not part of it (grading) – this is to ensure impartiality,” explained Lim.

“I invited an examiner from Taekwondo Malaysia and Master Johnny Loke came to assess the exponents (on Aug 8) to see if they deserved a promotion,” explained Lim.

“I’m delighted four of them moved up one grade while two went up two spots.”

Madilynn Tan, who won a gold medal at the International Heros Taekwondo Cup, earned two jumps from white to orange.

Heng Xuan Qi, who missed the Heroes event to compete in a gymnastics competition, moved up from yellow to green.

Other medallists from Heroes – Jayden Nishaan Sandhu, Myo Sett Kyaw, Ho Wern Xuen and Kestryl Joan Dewa Balan — also received new belts.

Jayden and Kestryl moved up from yellow to orange while Myo Sett and Ho advanced to yellow from white.

Lim said he would be arranging another grading for the other exponents early next year.

He also revealed he is planning on sending them for more competitions.

“They have been asking about it. The Heros event was just the first step and we need to make the step up.

“I want to enter them for higher-level competitions. They may have difficulty winning medals but it is through failure that they will learn more about themselves.

“That is how we help to build their character.”

Separately, Shepherdson presented Lim with a token of appreciation for his time and effort in moulding the GOTS scholars into taekwondo exponents.

“I speak for everyone when I say Master Mark has made a difference,” said Shepherdson.

“He may be strict but we know he only wants what is best for the scholars.

“Our exponents won medals in a competition which attracted over 1,700 participants and this is due to Master Mark’s tireless efforts.

“Thank you for everything and accept this token of appreciation from all of us .”

At GOTS, taekwondo is offered to scholars for free at its primary and secondary schools during Funky Munky and Chill Out sessions respectively. It is also offered as an extra class for those wishing to go for grading to earn their belts.
