Have a break, Chill Out
Global Oak Tree Scholars’ (GOTS) secondary school, which opens its doors in January, is the place to be if you want to combine top-notch education with life skills and a love for the arts.
Unlike other international schools, GOTS will offer for free, classes such as speech and drama, taekwondo, ballet, Taiko drums and hip-hop dance as part of a syllabus called Chill Out. This is in addition to its financial literacy lessons (FinancialSmart) and SHINE – the first experiential Emotional Intelligence (EQ) focused training framework in Southeast Asia.
“There are also plans to have cheerleading lessons and to start a Literature, Drama and Debating Society (LDDS),” says GOTS founder Veronica Shepherdson.
“Why are we doing these? While we place a big importance on education, we would also like to produce well-rounded students.
“This means providing something different from other schools and thinking outside the box to deliver subjects in a way which can appeal to everyone.”
As such, GOTS and Shepherdson thought long and hard before coming up with Chill Out.
One important component of Chill Out is the speech and drama class which will help scholars to improve communication – an essential tool to succeed in the workplace.
Speech and drama classes can also increase self-confidence, enhance imagination, give you the ability to empathise and improve your interpersonal skills
Taekwondo classes, meanwhile, will teach the scholars basic self-defence while developing their discipline by training their body and mind in the tenets and techniques of the martial art.
As for ballet, hip-hop and Taiko drums, it has been scientifically proven music has many psychological benefits.
Among others, music can
* Make you happier.
* Lower stress and improve health.
* Strengthen learning and memory.
* Reduce pain.
* Increase verbal intelligence.
* Improve your cognitive performance.
As such, GOTS hopes to deliver all these to its scholars via Chill Out.
