07 Jun Balik kampung with GOTS for Hari Raya
Global Oak Tree Scholars’ (GOTS) City of Elmina Campus in Shah Alam was turned into a ‘kampung’ as the school celebrated Hari Raya last week.
Bahasa Melayu coach Norashikin Mohammad Hariri worked tirelessly with other coaches to set the mood for the scholars, who were sad to be having a month-long break but happy to be celebrating Hari Raya.
“The scholars love the school so much, they don’t like having such a long holiday,” laughed Norashikin.
“But they worked very hard for the Hari Raya performances and I’m very proud of everyone.”
GOTS co-founder Veronica Shepherdson singled out Norashikin for praise for organising the event which saw everyone dressed in traditional garb.
The Hari Raya do started with a kompang performance as the scholars and coaches marched into the hall.
The pre-primary students then shone by dancing to M. Nasir’s Semerah Padi which was followed by a pantun by Year Four scholar Heng Xuan Qi and science coach Irene Malar Abel.
There was a short intermission to watch a video entitled ‘How much do you know about Hari Raya’.
This set the scene for the Year 5 scholars to present a Balik Kampung skit before lip-syncing and dancing to Seloka Raya by Uji Rashid and Hail Amir.
The Year 1 and 2 scholars then sang Selamat Hari Raya before everyone joined in to sing along to Sudirman’s Balik Kampung song as the grand finale which saw Shepherdson handing out Bunga Telur to the scholars.
The secondary scholars at Bukit Jelutong were not left out as they had their own celebration with the coaches earlier in the day.
They too came dressed in traditional outfits, made their own Hari Raya cards, played games and decorated the school cafeteria.
